Precision alignment reduces tyre wear 25 januari 2019

Precision alignment reduces tyre wear

Modern technology is focused on achieving the lowest possible weight and maximum durability. Whether we are discussing truck chassis or trailer chassis, the modern chassis are designed with a certain degree of flexibility. This does not go unnoticed by the haulier either, because in most cases the wheel positions of the newly delivered equipment are not optimal. This leads to excessive tyre wear, in some cases disagreeable road handling that will be felt by the driver and higher fuel consumption.

In such cases alignment is the best solution. This provides everyone involved the best assurance that the wheel angles are optimal and that no extra costs are to be expected. Alignment is also recommended in the case of installation of a steering system. Although the position of the axle remains the same, the installation of a steering system creates more movement in the undercarriage, making it advisable to check the position of the axle and wheels under the chassis now and then.

VSE seeks to provide customers personalised service tailored to their alignment needs, together with alignment specialist Kobus Uitlijntechniek. This multifaceted company understands real-world alignment issues like no other, and the company is familiar with all the types of chassis and trailers out there driving on our roads. VSE’s initiative to begin working with Kobus was prompted by numerous requests from the market. VSE wants to do everything possible to prevent misunderstandings with regard to the quality of their own steering systems and with respect to what customers can expect.

Alignment is not only advisable in connection with daily use but often also several months after delivery. This need arises because chassis, no matter how strong they may appear, are not absolutely rigid and thus have a certain degree of flexibility. Even after the installation of a VSE steering system, alignment is a wise course of action. It is not mandatory, but for those who want to be certain they are getting the best results from their trailers and the steering system, alignment is the best guarantee that the savings on fuel consumption and tyre costs are going to be achieved within the calculated period.

The alignment of knuckle-steered axles is best done in the loaded condition. Modern chassis are flexible and therefore also flex internally – separately from the suspension system – when they are loaded. As a general rule, in the case of knuckle-steered axles, a properly aligned combination maintains a straight line best when it has been measured and adjusted in the loaded condition. The difference is clear to see from the lower fuel consumption and reduced tyre costs, on top of the tyre cost reduction achieved through use of a VSE steering system.
